Chur-Swizerland

Chur-Swizerland

Chur has been inhabited since at least 3000 BC. Chur is the capital of
the canton of Graubunden (or Grisons in French). A Stone Age relics
which was found here has been displayed in the splendid archaeological
museum in the Old Town.

The main tourist attractions at the city are the Rhine River and
spectacular mountains and valleys in the area. The world famous ski
resorts of St. Moritz, Arosa and Davos are also nearby. A special
treat in Chur is the Romantik Hotel Stern, with its impressive
collection of old coaches and sleighs.

The oldest town in Switzerland, with a settlement history dating back
5,000 years, harbours many a secret just waiting to be uncovered! For
example, in the 800-year old cathedral or in one of the picturesque
winding streets in the Old Town. The spirit of bygone days lives on
in Chur and merges with the present to create the town’s incomparable
charm. Particularly worth a visit is the Rhaetian Museum, the Museum
of Fine Arts and the Natural History Museum. Chur is the only Swiss
city with its very own winter and summer sports region, high up on the
Brambrüesch mountain (1,200-2,200 m above sea-level). Furthermore,
Chur offers the broadest culinary range of Graubünden delicacies, all
concentrated in one town – with its own wine, alpine source water from
every tap, Bündner specialities and international dishes served at its
130 restaurants. In summer, open-air events, such as concerts, theatre
and cinema, give Chur a Mediterranean feel. In addition, over 500 shops
and stores offer produce and wares from all over Graubünden. Chur is
also home to an animal and leisure park, and, at the Obere Au on the
banks of the Rhine, a large sports centre, with an open-air and indoor
swimming pool, beach volleyball, inline skating, skateboarding, BMX
biking, tennis, horse riding, jogging, and much more besides. From here,
the town centre is conveniently reached in just 10 minutes by bicycle
or bus. Want to explore further afield? Take a trip with the Bernina
Express on the Albula route from Chur to St. Moritz and Tirano, which
is recognised far and wide as a magnificent feat of railway engineering.
Or with the Glacier Express to the Matterhorn, the Arosa Express to
the world-renowned health resorts or the Heidi Express to Davos. The
connection between the Bernina Express and the new Engadin Star through
the Vereina Tunnel enables visitors to explore Graubünden by train in a
thrilling one-day round trip, departing from Chur. Bathing fun in Bad
Ragaz or wine-tasting in the Bündner Herrschaft wine-growing region round
off the variety of activities on offer. Twenty-six health resorts within
just 15 to 45 minutes – Chur is the focal point of the Switzerland’s
holiday corner!
